Aix en Provence
The city of paul cézanne
Our hotel in the centre of Aix is located in the Mazarin neighbourhood. This area was built from 1646 by Archbishop Mazarin, the brother of the famous cardinal. It is home to old squares built around fountains, such as the Quatre Dauphins (four dolphins) and streets lined with exceptional town houses, such as the Hotel de Caumont, an 18th century, fully restored private residence which is now home to the Aix en Provence Arts Centre.
From Hotel La Caravelle, walk to the Musée Granet, on the Cours Mirabeau where sunny café terraces invite you to sit and watch the world go by, to the Place des Prêcheurs or the Place des Cardeurs, to discover Italian-style façades, elegant shops, daily markets, chocolate shops and patisseries where you can sample calissons d'Aix, traditional local sweets, and set off in the footsteps of Cézanne towards the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, a quintessential part of the Aix en Provence landscape.
Caumont Arts Centre
A stone's throw from the Cours Mirabeau, the Arts Centre of Aix en Provence opened its doors in the Hotel de Caumont, a fully renovated 18th century private residence. Caumont Arts Centre presents major temporary exhibitions each year, displaying the works of some of the most renowned artists in the history of art, from the 14th century to the present day : CANALETTO, TURNER, SISLEY…
A film entitled "Cézanne au pays d’Aix" is screened on loop every day in auditorium. It presents the artist's life and his passion for Aix en Provence and the region. As you visit the private residence, lose yourself in the refinement of this exceptional space, from the great courtyard to the gardens and the perfectly restored salons. These salons are full of details which tell the story of day to day life in the time of Pauline, Marquise of Caumont, one of the most famous owners of the 18th century residence.
The hotel's private gardens have been landscaped in the style of the same era. They stretch over 1,000 m², with trees, fountains, and paths lined with bushes and flower bowls. The salons and the gardens can be booked for private receptions: business dinners, cocktail parties, weddings, launch parties, and other business or private events.
